　　《儒林外史》第5556回的主要内容
　　第五十五回。小说讲到这里已是尾声，从第二回到此回，已历108年了。当年那些南京的名士们有的闭门不问世事，有的老，有的死，现世正当年的，他们不讲文行出处的或失意、愚拙，或揣和逢迎。让人不由得感叹。
　　但是，市井之间出了四位奇人：
　　一个是季遐年。无家无业，寺庙安身。以写字为生，自出格调。穿戴不修边幅，一件稀烂的直裰，一双稀烂的蒲鞋是他的标志。性情率性佯狂，藐视权贵。
　　第二个王太：围棋高手，正职是卖火纸筒子的小贩。但是下棋的目的只是图个快活，不为吃喝。
　　第三个名曰盖宽。画一手好画，干的是开茶馆的营生。原本是开当铺的，但是仗义疏财，伙计没良心，家频落难，妻子亡故后，带儿女开茶馆度日。看破世情，洁身自爱。
　　第四个乃荆元。五十多岁，做裁缝的，但弹一手好琴，也极喜欢作诗。但他所为的雅事，是真性情，绝非附庸。他的话着实了得：不贪图人的富贵，又不伺候人的颜色，天不收，地不管，倒不快活。这一境界除了杜少卿之辈，哪是前番诸多假名士能企及的！
　　这四人应该是文木老人的理想寄托。
　　第五十六回。此回一直被称为《幽榜》。时至万历四十三年，各省水旱天灾，流民载道。河南道监察御史单扬言上奏说，是因为民间有很多有才学之士，朝廷不委以用，有才无处施展，积聚的怨气与天地合为一体，致使水旱成灾。于是请求朝廷深入民间调查，对于确有才学的，不论生死，均赐予追赐。朝廷采纳后，对于90多贤人名士，根据才情大小，分别给予了不同等第功名，但这真的是尊重重用人才的作为吗？以昭圣治，安抚民心罢了。
　　至此，全书结束！
　　儒林外史四位奇人，各有什么奇本领
　　书法，棋，画，琴。
　　1、第一个是会写字的，这人叫季遐年，自小儿天家无业，总在寺院里安身。每天跟着和尚在寺院里吃斋，和尚倒也不厌他。一个会写字的人到底奇在何处。
　　奇就奇在他字写的好却有很多的怪癖和举动：他的字写的最好，却又不肯学古人的法帖，只是自己创出来的格调，由着笔性写了去，但凡人要请他写字时，他三日前，就要斋戒一日，第二日磨一天的墨，却又不许别人替磨。
　　2、第二个是卖火纸筒子的，叫王太，他祖代是三牌楼卖菜的，到他父亲手里穷了，把菜园都卖掉，后来父亲死了，他无以为生，每日到虎踞夫一带卖火纸筒过活。只是有一个好处，他喜欢下围棋。
　　有一天走上街头，看到几个人下围棋，大家互相吹捧者，说这个是国手，那个是名手，王太总笑，几个人看他衣衫褴褛，不服气，和他一下最厉害的国手也输给了他，这才吃惊，同时请他去吃酒论谈。
　　王太大笑道：天下那里还有个快活似杀矢棋的事！我杀过矢棋，心里快活极了，那里还吃的下酒！说毕，哈哈大笑，头也不回就去了。
　　3、第三个是开茶馆的，叫盖宽，本来是个开当铺的人，也有些家产，可是他乐善好施，为了接济别人把家里各样的东西都变卖尽了，自己又不懂经营，只能开个茶馆，每日只卖得五六十壶茶，只赚得五六十个钱，只维持的柴米。就是这样的困境，他的几本心爱的古书却是不肯卖。
　　4、第四个是做裁缝的，叫姓荆元，五十多岁，每日替人家做了生活，余下来工夫就弹琴写字，也极喜欢做诗。当时的裁缝是个低贱的行当，朋友问他：你既要做雅人，为甚么还要做你这贵行？何不同些学校里人相与相与？他道：我也不是要做雅人，也只为性情相近，故此时常学学。
