　　到了第41回，交代了沈琼枝是如何结识了，杜少卿等人。写出了杜少卿的仁义！但开头部分不是多吸引人。无非就是武书与杜少卿在南京城遇到了庄濯江等人，介绍了他们的关系。庄濯江与杜少卿的父亲是旧相识，但却是庄绍光的族亲侄子。几个人相互拜访，游玩作诗。看到了沈琼枝的招牌后，前去认识。引来沈琼枝到杜少卿家的回访。此时，江都县差役来捉拿沈琼枝。沈只得随他们回去。沈琼枝的命运得到逆转。回去的船上，遇到李老四带着两个妓女投奔汤老六。于是就引出下一波事件。
　　第42回，汤奉汤镇台的两个儿子汤由汤实要来南京赶考，路过这里，被汤老六接待。并且把这俩带坏了的事。席间，两个公子大谈考场上的程序、排场。考完后，两个公子请戏班演戏，又找戏子饮酒作乐。汤二公子因与人争执，被脱光衣服关了起来。二十天后揭榜，真是，苍天有眼，这俩货双双落榜！

　　沈琼枝，《儒林外史》人物，常州才女，善诗书、重名节。因不从盐商宋为富，父女遭迫害，只身流落金陵，以卖诗顾绣为生。后参殿试，中同进士。
　　作者首先将沈琼枝置于待嫁的位子上，沈父沈大年本以为会将女儿明媒正娶，等着宋家择吉过门。但后来发现光景不对，宋家大模大样地要将沈琼枝直接抬到府里去，这不像要将她待为正室的样子，沈父沈大年知道事情不妙，就问女儿：这门亲事，还是就得就不得？女儿，你也须自己主张。沈琼枝道：爹爹，你请放心，我家又不曾写立文书，得他身价，为什么肯伏低做小！他既如此排场，爹爹若是和他吵闹起来，倒反被外人议论。我而今乘轿子，抬到他家去，看他怎样待我。这是沈琼枝出场后的第一句话，从这精炼的几句话中，我们不仅可以看到一位精明干练的女子，而且从中看出了沈的有勇有谋，她要将一切事情原委弄个究竟后再做打算，看出了她的反抗斗争不是莽撞糊涂的瞎闹一气，而是明白就理的为人格独立和尊严而进行的斗争。

　　书中将沈的大胆泼辣表现得淋漓尽致，但对她的外貌倒是着墨不多，我们再回头审视一下这位侠女的样貌。在书中第四十回，我们所获关于沈样貌的信息并不多，唯一的一个还是从宋为富丫环口中得知的：新娘人物倒生得标致，只是样子觉得惫懒我们再从封建社会娶妻娶德，娶妾娶貌的男子婚姻观念中来看，也不难推断出琼枝的美丽。
　　沈琼枝为何要远离锦衣玉食的生活而选择风雨飘摇的生活？这值得我们深思。在《儒林外史》中同样具有抗争意识的还有很多人，但我们却有截然不同的两种感受。比如王太太，她有所谓喇子的名声，也就是泼皮、无赖，她性子颇不温和，也是位不好惹的女子，但她显得庸俗可恶，她抗争的目的不过是贪图享乐而已。书中写道：他每日睡到中午才醒来，横草不拿，竖草不拈。每日要吃八分银子药而琼枝的抗争却是为尊严而战，源于她不堪忍受小妾身份的思想，源于她不愿以张耳之妻侍外黄佣奴的情感，这些使她感到从观念到情感都受到了侮辱。安逸的生活大多数人都不会嫌弃，但如果要用尊严去换取，琼枝绝做不到。
