　　仙人了解到马纯上当前窘迫，有意周济。给了几块黑煤，马纯上带回家中用火一炼即成了银子。仙人又请有钱的胡公子出银万两，用以准备炼丹的物料，说是四十九日后即可练出银母，到时可点石成金。随后，仙人却驾鹤西去。他的仆人说出了原委，洪憨仙并非仙人，只是意在周济马纯上。协助办完丧事后，马纯上在街上遇到一个拆字的少年匡迥，流落街头，无钱回家。而家中的父亲又病重，很是惨然。马纯上借与他十两银子，资助他回家尽孝，并一再叮嘱要举业进学。回家的船上，遇到郑老爹（日后成了匡迥的丈人），讲了一件事情张氏兄弟因埋怨父亲偏袒小儿子而打闹。被父亲告官后，老大老二上下使钱，并冒充父亲的名义撤了诉。
　　儒林外史洪憨仙人物形象分析
　　仗义救助蘧公孙的马二，花光了积蓄，手头拮据。他来到西湖的丁仙祠，想求签问卜。忽然，来了有位仙人模样的老者，直呼其名。对方的未卜先知，令马二大吃一惊。马二跟随来到老者的寓所，方知老者唤作洪憨仙，是位三百多岁，可以点石成金的神仙。
　　身处窘境的马二如获至宝，他讲了自己的境遇，向洪憨仙求财。这洪憨仙真不含糊，他接连把几块黑煤变作白银。马二拿着银子到钱店鉴定，认定为十足纹银。人生迷茫的马二，眼前出现了希望，他认为自己真的遇到神仙了。
　　相信洪憨仙是神仙的，不止马二一人。尚书府的胡三公子，他也承认洪憨仙是神仙，相信点金术是真的。胡三公子是个钱痴财迷，他将自家花园打扫，以为丹室。并拿出万两白银，托洪憨仙修制药物，练成银母，来点石成金。
　　一切准备妥当，那知洪憨仙突然死了，而且是年老体衰病死的。马二没有昧良心的私吞洪憨仙的银子，他拿出银子给洪憨仙料理了后事。后从洪憨仙女婿口中得知，一切都是假的。黑煤变作的白银，原来是银子染上了煤黑。马二的名字，也是洪憨仙一旁听到的。
　　洪憨仙的神奇表演，是在其儿子、两个侄子、女婿的操作下，得以实现。由于表演的没有纰漏，胡三公子、马二都信以为真。洪憨仙是不是神仙，他自己心里明白。偌大年纪，他此举是为了满足个人向作神仙的虚荣心。一边的儿子、侄子、女婿的，他们假扮仆人也是在帮助洪憨仙实现不切实际的梦想。老傅的阔佬梦与洪憨仙的神仙梦，真的很相似。
　　然老傅的阔佬梦，只是满足个人虚荣心，没有其他目的，是善意的。洪憨仙的神仙梦，则不单纯是为满足个人虚荣心。倘或洪憨仙没有死，胡三公子的万两银子，也就给骗走了。洪憨仙骗术未酬身先死，令人耻笑。《儒林外史》内的骗子挺多，骗术花样繁多，洪憨仙的神仙术不过是其中之一而已。
