　　《儒林外史》第八回的主要内容
　　第八回，写了王惠的赴任与为官特点，直到投降反叛朝廷的宁王，最终事败逃窜的所遇。
　　这一回比上一回好看，因为终于在污浊中，见到些许清流。
　　一是蘧太守，出场时，已卸任。他为官，务在安辑，与民休息，无为而治。按照其子蘧景玉的介绍，南昌人情，鄙野有余，巧诈不足，所以蘧太守准的词讼甚少，于是衙门里讼简刑清，常闻吟诗声，下棋声，唱曲声。可是后任太守王惠上任之后，就真变成了戥子声，算盘声，板子声了！
　　蘧太守算得上是个清官，为官数年，布衣蔬食，依旧是儒生行径，且不恋江湖，却常念故园几亩薄产，可供饘粥；先人敝庐，可蔽风雨，所以风尘劳攘时候，每怀长林丰草之思，任期未满便告病回乡。令人敬佩！
　　二是其子蘧景玉，确是名贤公子，翩然俊雅，举动不群，谈言微中，名士风流，丰姿雅韵，跃然纸上，可惜去世太早。自古道休官莫问子，是说盼着借老子光的儿子到处都有，而蘧景玉对父亲的急流勇退却是既理解又欣慰。所以王惠赞他看老世台这等襟怀高旷，尊大人所以得畅然挂冠。当王惠说不日高甲，老先生正好做封翁享福，蘧公子却言：人生贤不肖，倒也不在科名。晚生只愿家君早归田里，得以菽水承欢，这是人生至乐之事。对比之下，境界全出！
　　蘧太守、蘧公子父子两代，淡泊清雅，虽然着墨不多，然都可位列上品。
　　只是他们的后代蘧公孙在这样的熏陶下成长，却未能免俗，让人遗憾。完全违背了其祖与其出一个斫削元气的进士，不如出一个培养阴骘的通儒的心愿。从蘧公孙将《高青丘集诗话》添了自己的名字去刊刻，还遍赠亲友，借此成了众人仰慕的少年名士，这种取巧寡德的行径开始他的俗气平庸就愈加突出了。
　　不过，这蘧来旬心地良善，古道热肠，有周济穷途的善举，倒是可以赞可的，蒲松龄待他真厚道，在情节上设计他奉祖叔之命入赘鲁府，娶了风格迥异，才华不凡的鲁小姐，真是祖上积德所致啊！
