　　蘧公孙遇到开办帮人补习学问的课堂的马纯上，听他大谈升学的窍门，很受启发。娄家的仆人宦成与蘧家的丫鬟双红私通，带着原先王惠丢在蘧老太爷家的箱子跑了。蘧公孙告了官，而拿人的差役知道了那个箱子是叛官的赃物后，诈走了宦成身上的全部银子，并以宦成的名义去诈蘧公孙要银子，并假惺惺提要求给双红赎身。差人没见到蘧公孙，找到了马纯上，马纯上极力要自己出银子把事情压下来。

　　马二先生是八股科举考试的虔诚信徒，他对匡超人说：你如今回去，奉事父母，总以文章举业为主。人生世上，除了这事，就没有第二件可以出头。不要说算命、拆字是下等，就是教馆、作幕，都不是个了局。只是有本事进了学，中了举人、进士，即刻就荣宗耀祖。这就是《孝经》上所说的‘显亲扬名’，才是大孝，自身也不得受苦。古语道得好：‘书中自有黄金屋，书中自有千钟粟，书中自有颜如玉’。
　　马二先生批八股文章，总是采取《语类》、《或问》上的精语，前者是黎靖德编的《朱子语类》，后者是朱熹做的《四书或问》。他总是跟在朱熹的后面亦步亦趋，不敢有所逾越。他著书就著《春秋》，读史就读《纲鉴》，他解释《诗经》，只知道遵照官定的举业读本《永乐大全》。他说：小弟每常见前辈批语，有些风花雪月的字样，被那些后生们看见，便要想到诗词歌赋那条路上去，便要坏了心术。他赞叹风景，只知道引用《中庸》里的载华岳而不重，振河海而不泄，万物载焉之类的现有句子，别无词汇。语言是思想的家园，圣贤书把他的语言都限制得僵死了，他哪里还有自己？他的大脑里塞满了圣贤的语录，再也没有给自己留下思考的空隙。
　　马二先生劝匡超人说：那害病的父亲，睡在床上？没有东西吃，果然听见你念文章的声气，他心花开了，分明难过也好过，分明那里疼也不疼了。八股文章竟然有疗饥止痛的奇效！马二先生已经把八股神化了，并对其无比痴迷。
　　别人做举业，也许并不纯正。或者是拿这个来做敲门砖，或者是用它来做幌子，全不把它当回事。而马二先生却干得极其认真，一点也不马虎。他在文翰楼做选家，时常一个批语，要做半夜。不肯苟且下笔，要那读文章的读了这一遍，就悟想出十几篇的道理，才为有益。马二先生是八股科举制度的受害者，这还不够，最可悲的是，他是那么真诚执著地引导别人走自己已经实践证明走不通的老路。这是对他尖锐的讽刺。
