儒林外史中王惠与荀玫是怎样的人物形象分析

　　王惠与荀玫是同乡，却又不是寻常的同乡，他们是进士同年。那年头人口流动不像现在这么频繁，一出了省，老乡相见都格外亲切，何况是一道在天子大殿应过试的。然而他们却又不是寻常的同年，交情特别，用王惠的话说，那叫天作之合。
　　此事说来话长。岁在大明成化末年，地处兖州府汶上县。周进此时尚未转运，正是龙蛇困于浅滩，在薛家集村委会所在地观音庵里教村塾。孔夫子故里就是有文化，再偏僻的小乡村里人们都懂得念书的重要：再苦不能苦孩子，再穷不能穷教育（当然据书中所写那时正是天下繁富的时候）。因此一县里出好几位进士也就不奇怪了：周进不久就要暮年登科了，此时却还有另外两位预备进士也在这汶上小县。
　　一位就是王惠后来的王太守，此时还只是个举人。王举人避雨走进村塾，在周进批改的小学生作业本上看到荀玫的名字，非同小可地一惊。因为这年正月初一，王举人做了一个颇不寻常的新年初梦，梦见自己看会试榜，同科进士中还有一位汶上同乡，名字便是荀玫：正疑惑我县里没有这一个姓荀的孝廉，谁知竟同着这个小学生的名字。难道和他同榜不成！此时的王举人颇为自负，再不相信自己会和一个七岁的小学生成为进士同年，因此当周进引述集上梅秀才的经历说梦也有准的时，王举人是很不以为然的。梅玖那梦，按照他自己的叙述，也是在正月初一，我梦见在一个极高的山上，天上的日头，不差不错，端端正正掉了下来，压在我头上，惊出一身的汗彼时不知甚么缘故，如今想来，好不有准！梅三相公这年进学中了秀才。对此解释，六十多岁了连个秀才还不曾中过的周进不敢不信，然而王举人不理这一套：这话更作不得准了。比如他进过学，就有日头落在他头上，像我这发过的，不该连天都掉下来，是俺顶着的了？王惠这乌鸦嘴，这一番话说出来，梅玖真就永无出头之日了。日头压在身上，也只做得个秀才；要想做举人，只有惊动银河系以外的神灵了。这事可不大容易，所以只好一辈子做梅秀才。
　　周进是老实人，觉得王举人这梦好玩，就学给众人听了，不想却给荀玫父子和他自己惹了许多麻烦。一薛家集的人都晓得荀家孩子是县里王举人的进士同年，荀玫从此背了十几年荀进士的绰号。别的孩子家长心理不平衡，偏要在荀老爹跟前恭喜，叫封翁，叫太爷，气得他有口难分（其实也用不着生气，叫就叫着呗。不过山东人都有个较真的倔脾气，大约邻里的冷嘲热讽在荀老爹听来实在可气，不由得不气笔者祖籍山东，多少遗传了点这种乡土气，所以挺理解荀老爹；外子出身南方商市之地，对荀老爹的心情便有些认识不足，以为不妨借此讨个口彩，发个利市）。还有议论说这是周进编出来的故事，为的是荀家有几个钱，奉承他多得点节礼周进因此安身不牢，后来到底失了馆。自然，这次失业对周进来说是个否极泰来的标志，从此时来运转，一路周监生、周举人、周进士、周学道、周司业地发达了去。而原本踌躇满志的王举人，却还要慢慢地考啊考啊，一直等着荀玫念完了小学念中学，念完了中学念大学，最后才进京会试，和他做同年进士王惠这说痴梦的乌鸦嘴，到底把自己也装进去了！
　　不过王惠天生是那种贬义上的实用主义者，不知感伤为何物，害他晚中了十几年进士的这梦，虽然将他的傲气消磨殆尽，却也能迅速成为他进行感情投资的好素材。须发皓白的王惠来访荀玫，一把拉着手，攀个天作之合的交情，说起昔年一梦，便道：可见你我都是天榜有名。将来同寅协恭，多少事业都要同做。后来他们果然没少一同做事，也分别在不同的地方做相似的事。此时的王惠又不做唯物主义者了，他与荀玫一道毕恭毕敬地礼拜鬼神，请陈和甫（后来为蘧公孙鲁小姐做媒、替鲁编修看病的那位）扶乩。荀玫的乩词简单而且迅速应验：三个服字，不等他们琢磨完，当晚报丧的家人就到了。王惠的乩词却是一首《西江月》，虽然此刻只读得懂说他五十登科的头一句羡尔功名夏后，但他似乎很乐意虔心听判。因为陈和甫说（这人大约算得上当时数一数二的名嘴，与季苇萧有一拼），乩词上既有天府夔龙，想是老爷升任直到宰相之职这话王惠最爱听，说到他心里去了。顺带说一句，这乩词判出了他两日黄堂做南昌知府，后来升了赣南道奉旨剿叛，却不想天生不测，被造反的琴瑟琵琶（宁王朱辰濠，玉牒上排行第八）捉住劝降，结果成为朝廷通缉的钦犯，然而没有交代其最后结局，吴敬梓先生给他的安排是更名改姓，削发披缁去了。
　　我读王惠、荀玫、梅玖他们的梦和乩词，忍不住会想：吴敬梓先生信鬼神么？他是以怎样的初衷来写王惠的梦和乩词呢？我不是考证家，只是直感地觉得，吴敬梓先生对鬼神，大约是信亦不信。信，是一种宽泛的信，相信人间自有公道，好人终有好报。所以书中有那么多的巧合：马二先生遇到的骗子及时地暴病身亡，向鼎赶得上鲍文卿的丧事，杜少卿困阻旅途遇得上故知，武正字每次考试都得第一，萧云仙料理响马贼头刚好弥补了父亲的遗憾，等等。然而对于那些不从格物致知诚意正心出发，不以修身齐家治国平天下为己任，只一味日思夜想功名富贵的人，对于那些人所迷信的鬼神痴梦，吴敬梓先生是引为无稽之谈的。所以他在书中有意布设了那些匪夷所思的梦和乩词。那些梦和乩词，表面看起来是王惠们为奇谲的命运所摆布、所捉弄：梅玖做一辈子老秀才，急于做官的荀玫不得不遵制丁忧三年，梦想做宰相的王惠穷途流落，不知所终；而实际上，跳到书外一步来看，这些情节的安排无一不是吴敬梓先生在借鬼神痴梦辛辣地翻弄、嘲讽那些一心飞黄腾达的势利之徒。王惠先前跟周进说起自己乡试中举的文章是考场上梦中拜一个纱帽红袍襟带之人与五个青脸随从（魁星与他的跟班？）所赐，说得神乎其神，信誓旦旦：贡院里鬼神是有的。而后来看到荀玫的作业本，说起与荀玫同年进士的梦时，却又矢口否认：可见梦作不得准！那里有什么鬼神！待到陈和甫说乩仙的判词预示着他的宰相运，王惠便又心里欢喜，深信不疑了。虽然吴敬梓先生用的全然是白描之笔，未置一句评语，然而这一番翻翻覆覆，却让王惠那副患得患失、颠三倒四的戚戚小人相暴露得好不彻底！
　　通过这些鬼神痴梦，王惠们的品格高下已然清楚，因此他们的行迹倒不必详尽备至了。无论为人还是为官，王惠与荀玫都不愧是天作之合，有共同的特色。二人之为人，一言以蔽之，曰苛，无忠恕之心。王惠傲慢，眼里没有周进这乡下塾师，不做谦让，竟自上座，大大咧咧自顾自吃，拱手抬腿走人，却撒了一地的鸡骨头、鸭翅膀、鱼刺、瓜子壳不收拾，害得周进昏头昏脑扫了一早晨。老秀才梅玖作文写得不好，眼看要挨范学道的板子（体罚学生，不好！），为免皮肉之苦，没奈何撒个谎，谎称是周司业的学生，已然是羞愧得很了，荀玫还偏要与他对质个清楚，逼得梅玖只好硬着头皮继续编那语无伦次的瞎话，做人实在是不厚道他的名字还是梅玖给起的呢。当年梅玖新中了秀才，替刚开蒙的荀玫也起了个王旁的名字发发兆，希望他将来发达的意思，对他实在是不错谁想到三十年河东三十年河西，现在会是这样？这些事情或许都不过是小节，然而小节处往往可见大端。王惠与荀玫之为人，不仅无可称道之处，有时简直不可饶恕。荀玫丧母，不甘为丁忧误了做官，听信王惠的挑唆，四下活动求保举夺情。对比范进的老实遵制丁忧，为人的本质区别就不言自明了。王惠逃难时得到蘧公孙的慷慨相助，于他有再生之恩，而他不仅不据实相告，反而明知可能会给对方带来麻烦还把自己的枕箱托付给蘧公孙后来几乎给蘧公孙一家带来杀身之祸，这是最不可原谅之处。
　　二人之为官，亦可一言以蔽之，曰贪，同寅协恭都是漂亮话，管他谁的朝廷谁的百姓，自己捞到好处才是硬道理。荀玫是书中明确写道在盐运司（好肥的差啊！）的任上，因贪赃被拿问了的。而王惠甫到南昌，便向前任蘧太守的公子打听地方人情，可还有甚么出产？词讼里可也略有些甚么通融？对交接手续却是拖着不肯办，非等到蘧公子以太守的俸银积蓄填补了衙门公务赤字才罢。虽然他们都是很能干的人，然而在吴敬梓先生看来，无德之人能干，往往只有使世相更坏，还不如平庸一点，为害或许还能减少一些。王惠是能干的，是江西保荐第一能员，宁王造反，朝廷将其倚为干城，推升了赣南道，催趱军需，然而及期就是这位临危受命的王大人先降顺了，并且是领着南赣数郡一齐归降王惠是对不重文行出处的科举考试选拔人材方式的最具讽刺意味的注脚。
　　为人苛酷，为官贪鄙，王惠与荀玫把孔夫子的学而优则仕糟蹋的狠了，不把他们划入儒林中的下品人物，别人也就都难划了。
　　比起荀玫的拿问下狱，王惠的不知所终，做一辈子老秀才的梅玖应该算是得善终的了。不过我不能原谅他对周进的戏耍嘲弄，所以当他也是下品人物当然不像王、荀那般可憎。
