　　陈家洛，清朝武士。江宁（今浙江海宁）人。少时以武闻名。康熙间，客於京师显贵之家，以武术技艺闻名当世。雍正中，因浙江总督李卫镇压顾云清反清案受株连，但未被处死。至乾隆间，八十馀终於家。

　　很多人说过陈家洛是个失败的人物，但我怀疑每个人都有一个阶段梦想过做陈家洛那样的人，出身高贵而平民化，文武全才，风度翩翩，重情重义，有崇高理想，为国家民族甘愿牺牲个人幸福。如果陈家洛是个失败的人物，那正好显示这个梦想多么不现实。陈家洛最大的失败是政治上的失败，无论他在个人品行上怎样清白，作为红花会的总舵主，他也是彻头彻尾的失败。
　　《书剑恩仇录》故事一开始便叙述红花会的头目，怎样以最隆重的千里接龙头礼节，去迎接陈家洛做他们的总舵主，而他们决意让一个二十来岁的公子哥儿模样的人物当总舵主，唯一原因是上一任总舵主有遗命说，光复汉人江山的大业，关键在这个人的身上。然而，陈家洛没有完成任务，他与皇帝结盟的结果是一败涂地，白白牺牲了不少英雄的性命，最后只落得全体退隐回疆。
　　陈家洛的失败，固然是与他的时代及使命有关，但是他的天真幼稚也是一个重要因素，他太重私人感情而忽略客观因素，因为他有丰富的感情而毫不了解政治，可能完全不同。这样缺乏经验智慧的人，注定是失败的政治人物。
　　陈家洛身为领袖，事实上是个最被动的人。他本来不想做总舵主，认为跟自己个性不合，但人家一定坚持，他便接受了，说没有野心，恐怕是骗自己，沈有彀认为陈家洛适合做总舵主，因为他知道当今皇帝是陈家洛的亲哥哥，陈家洛可以用兄弟之情、与乾隆本来就是汉人之实，去打动皇帝，叫他恢复汉人衣冠。这个计划行不行得通，大有疑问，但陈家洛没有考虑个中问题，义父叫他做，众人叫他做，这是关乎民族气数的事，他就做了。他接过任务之后，在人前努力表现出一派领袖风范，但独处之际，最系心怀的却是个人恩怨对错。没有自知之明，好高骛远，只顾成全私德，不衡量公众效果，正是陈家洛书生论陈家洛政的弱点。
　　陈家洛与乾隆皇数次会面，每次都紧扣人心弦。第一次是陈家洛在西湖畔游山，碰见乾隆在山中抚琴，彼此不知对方是谁，但感异常亲近，又异常遥远。第二次是晚上暗探衙门，乾隆正夜审文泰来，陈家洛惊见原来日间抚琴之人是当今皇帝。乾隆身分已露。第三次相会是西湖舟上的鸿门宴，表面客气斯文，暗地刀枪严密，一方是侍卫护驾，一方是群雄相随，言词针锋相对，比武则互搏生死，形势凶险万分，极亲近的陈家洛两个人，无奈又是极端对立，而咫尺不得亲近，又加强了两人之间的吸力。第四次是宣泄，陈家洛回海宁老家拜祭父母，在坟前哭泣，乾隆却己在泣祭，两人乍见之下，心情激动，互相执手。
　　乾隆知道了陈家洛是陈世官的儿子，即是自己亲兄弟，但陈家洛仍未知道乾隆是他哥哥。两人携手钱塘江畔听潮，陈家洛向乾隆倾诉对母亲的思念，这次是两人最接近的一次。这四次见面，特别是最后一次，对陈家洛意义重大，因为这次感情流露的叙会，在他心中奠定了皇帝对他很好。是他很亲近的人这个观念，他的错误，就是让这个私人感情不自觉陈家洛地发展成信任乾隆皇帝。
　　所以，到第五次见面，乾隆被红花会群雄囚在六和塔顶，陈家洛便信心十足了。此时陈家洛已知乾隆身世，亦知道了自己的任务是要劝乾隆与红花会结盟，恢复汉人朝廷，乾隆无奈答应，陈家洛却因为过分自信而以为他真心站在红花会的一边，终于导致最后陈家洛一败涂地。
　　从私人感情到信任，从信任人到自信，陈家洛所犯的错误真是多而严重至无可复加，他不明白除了爱惜他之外，乾隆爱惜的还有自己的安乐地位，除了为他所刻画的开国明君抱负所动之外，也为太后的恐吓所动。人是自私懦弱的，受环境受习惯所支配，皇帝也是人。要是陈家洛不是那么自信，或者他会考虑到这些因素，毕竟，他是个聪明人，但他太自信而太信任对他有感情的人了，他离开成熟还很远。
　　陈家洛是有动人的一面的，但不是在他扮演本领高强的总舵主的时候，而是在他软弱的时刻。他率领红花会在西湖上大挫皇帝的威风，没有什么令人心折之处，但事但事后他忽然记起陈家洛当晚是他母亲生日前夕，顿时心情落寞，避开众人独自纵舟湖中，为亡母恸哭，却是十分动人，不幸伤心之际、忽然来了个李沅芷，无端捣乱一番，他又得摆出总舵主的样子了。
　　五见乾隆，以钱塘江畔一次最令人感动，亦是因为那次最真情流露，忘了江湖恩怨，忘了国家大事，他不由自主地向这个既陌生而又亲近的人，诉说母亲在这天生日，故此叫做潮生。乾隆送他一块佩玉，上面有情深不寿的字，陈家洛就是这么忧郁多情的一个人。
