　　季萑，号苇萧，安庆府怀宁县童生案首，后投奔扬州盐运使荀玫，被安置在瓜州管关税。他在扬州再婚，受人质问时回答：你不见‘才子佳人信有之’？我们风流人物，只要才子佳人会合，一房两房，何足为奇！到南京，他又以才子佳人，正宜及时行乐来恭贺杜慎卿纳宠，并投其所好，百般逢迎，除设计赚杜慎卿到神乐观访少俊外，又成了杜慎卿逞风流高会莫愁湖的主要帮闲人物。杜少卿搬来秦淮河房，他闻风赶来，腆颜地说：我也寻两间河房同你做邻居，把贱内也接来同老嫂作伴。这买河房的钱，就出在你！又劝杜少卿娶妾，及时行乐。最后投充凤阳府厉知府的幕客。这人物颇类《金瓶梅》中帮间篾片应伯爵而较文雅，其生活原型是吴敬梓的朋友李啸村。
　　生老病死，生离死别。倪家也是多舛，鲍廷玺从阿三口中得知，嫂子生病去世了，大哥一时心急，也得了病，不得多久也离世了。亲人离世，再加上幸福生活希望的破灭，自然让鲍廷玺悲痛至极。之后把身上带的盘缠给大哥上坟用了，这下连回家的路费也没了。
　　无奈之下，就去投奔了扬州的季苇萧，季苇萧自诩风流少年，可不，这正在娶第二房媳妇，乐哉乐哉。鲍廷玺在季苇萧这边讨了一点路费，并带着季苇萧给南京一位名叫季恬逸的朋友的信回到了南京。挨老婆一顿骂，自然免不了，先前押了二十两银子的大房子也只能舍了押金退回去，日子没好转多久又回到先前穷得叮当响了。
　　这季恬逸也是无用之人，和季苇萧一路出来，现在季苇萧不带他玩了，把他留在南京，写信就是让其回安庆老家，免得没得饭吃。还果真是让季苇萧说中了，现在的季恬逸确实吃了上顿没下顿。这日，正饿得发呆，一位名叫诸葛天申的来找到他，让其帮忙找一位选文章的名士。季恬逸心下想，正好蹭饭，便积极帮忙，偶然间碰到萧金铉，便将萧金铉介绍给诸葛天申。随后，三人一起去一所僧庵租了房子，准备选书事宜。
　　季苇萧的骗局
　　与一般假名士不同，杜慎卿甫一上场即以秀美的颜值与不同流俗的见解给人留下了深刻的印象。他大谈朋友之情超过男女之情，貌似超凡脱俗，实则有断袖之癖。
　　季苇萧见其走火入魔，投其所好，成心捉弄，刻意强调来霞士与一般的男美不同，造成他是一个风流飘逸少年的假象，诱惑杜慎卿前去寻访。杜慎卿果然上钩，甚至为此暂缓纳妾。
　　次日，他兴冲冲地换上新衣、浑身熏香，满怀期待地访艳，结果发现所谓男美却是一个五十多岁满腮胡须的肥胖道士，与其心理预期反差极大，造成强烈的喜剧效果，连他自己亦忍不住掩口而笑。
　　天一评曰：季苇萧诳骗杜慎卿一节，适慎卿在着魔之际，情不自禁，故落其玄中，及至会见来道士，方始悟晓，写其情景，真神妙笔墨。
　　一般而言，杜慎卿见多识广，不会轻易上当，但在入魔之际，他已经丧失了基本的辨识能力，所以自然堕入圈套，徒然留下笑柄。这个骗局并不以骗财骗色为目的，男色只是作为诱骗的触媒，朋友之间无伤大雅的戏谑不会造成实质性伤害，只不过制造了茶余饭后的谈资而已，所以受骗的杜慎卿不以为忤。
　　吴敬梓对此以调侃之笔出之，显然寓有辛辣的嘲讽之意，讥刺杜慎卿、季苇萧貌似与众不同、清新脱俗，实则是把肉麻当有趣，低级趣味、空虚无聊。
