　　聘娘是来宾楼的一个妓女，没有地位、没有权势，卑微地生活在社会的最底层。她一心想要和名士来往，以改变自己的生存境遇。然后，她遇到了陈四老爷。在聘娘的眼中，陈四老爷就是她的贵人，是可以帮助她改变命运、脱离苦海的救星。于是，为了达到自己的目的，聘娘用尽女性的一切温柔去讨好、奉承他。譬如，书中提到她对陈四老爷的一番话：我是好人家儿女，也不是贪图你做官，就是爱你的人物，你不要辜负了我这一点心。一读便知，这句话是假的，一切都只是掩饰，假象之下，连一丝的温情都没有。
　　可见，科举制度对世人的毒害已渗透到社会的各个角落，广泛而且深远，聘娘只是深受其害的芸芸众生中的一个。人们为何把科举看得如此之重？究其原因，还在于它是一条从下层老百姓变为上层士大夫的通途由科举出仕，便可以高高在上这便是世人梦寐以求的。但是，它扭曲了人们的心灵，滋生了欺骗、伪装和不幸。
　　而聘娘的南柯一梦正是她内心渴求的真实写照。她的梦，暴露了她的真实想法，先前的温柔和甜言蜜语其实都是伪装。她用尽心机，却也单纯、傻傻地等待着那份不可能得到的幸福。陈四老爷陈木楠的一走了之彻底击碎了聘娘的梦，梦醒后，她仍旧只是一个卑贱的妓女。值得一提的是，梦中她曾被一秃头师姑揪住，现实中的她最后也真的剃头出家去了。这样的呼应，看似诙谐，但其中所包含的无奈、辛酸与同情，却深深地震撼了我们的心灵。
