　　权勿用，号潜斋，是吴敬梓长篇讽刺小说《儒林外史》中的人物。
　　权勿用是萧山县人，祖上几代都在山里务农，到了他父亲这一辈，家道略有起色，手里有了几个钱，就送权勿用到村学去读书。这本来是一件好事，可是当时所谓读书，只是学一点八股文章，准备应付科举考试。这样的读书，自然学不到什么真才实学，却足以培养出所有读书人的坏习气。权勿用在这样的学校读到十七、八岁，村学的先生又怂恿他参加科举考试。从此，更把他推上了一条科举时代千千万万读书人所共同走过的悲剧道路。
　　权勿用屡困场屋，一连考了三十多年，却连一回也没有取。这三十多年的考试，把一个年轻人考成了半老头，把一个原本可以成为好劳力的庄户人家子弟考成了完全失去生活能力的不伦不类的书呆子。权勿用考上了瘾，不仅悟不出科举考试的毒害，反而在其中越陷越深，不能自拔。直到把父亲留下的一份家产弄得精光，才不得不暂时丢下考试的念头，去找一个糊口的办法。
　　他全然没有谋生的本领，既不会种田，又不会做生意，在乡邻们眼里是个不中用的货。只得借在土地庙里教了几个学生，将就混一口饭吃。尽管生活上落得如此困窘，权勿用却从来不肯把自己混同于一般庄户人，他把盐店伙计，一脑瓜书呆子气的杨执中引为知己，杨执中一番天文地理、经纶匡济的混话使他听得就象神附着的发了疯。从此，尚未从科举梦中醒来的权勿用，又一头跌进做高人名士的疯魔中。
　　其实无论是杨执中还是权勿用，都根本不了解高人名士的本质。他们想做高人，只不过因为他们心中膨胀着一种出人头地的愿望。这种由科举制度点燃起来却又无法通过科举来实现的愿望，只有通过其它渠道来渲泄。对权勿用来说，混充名士高人还成了一种混饭吃的手段。在他那里，名士高人的任情旷达、恃才放纵变成了骗人耍赖。因为做了高人，教不成书，没有饭吃，在家穷的要不的，他便在街坊上骗人过日子，口里动不动说我和你至交相爱，分什么彼此，你的就是我的，我的就是你的。这时的权勿用，虽然自许为高人，实际上已堕落成专靠骗混过日子的无行文人。
　　正当权勿用陷入骗人耍赖日渐不灵的困境时，杨执中又给他带来了新的转机。他被当作一位有经天纬地之才，空前绝后之学的高人介绍给娄相府的两位公子，两位公子思贤若渴，不仅请杨执中专程相邀，而且布置了潜亭，专等权勿用来住。相府的礼遇不仅使他从衣食不周的困顿中解脱出来，而且证明了高人是受人仰慕、尊敬的，这大大增强了权勿用要做高人的兴致，使他的高人生涯进入全盛时期。
　　权勿用自许为高人，却根本不懂上层社会的礼节与待人接物的常识，甚至连城里的路都不会走。他去相府拜客，却穿着一身孝服，头上还戴着高白夏布孝帽。在路上，他一味横着膀子乱撞，不是帽子被人家挑柴的扁担勾住带走，就是一头撞到官轿上去，还向着官指手画脚地乱吵，出了许多洋相。假充侠客的张铁臂因为替权勿用解围而骗得了他的信任。他就这样衣冠不整、怪模怪样，带着一个貌似侠客的骗子来到娄相府。这一番行径在两位闲得无聊的相府公子眼里却正是与众不同的高人之举。他从此被娄府待为上客，一心一意当起高人来。当两位公子邀集许多名士，在莺脰湖聚会宴游的时候，他则穿上三公子赠的浅蓝绸直裰，手执纨扇，站在一班真假名士中间，耳边有细乐清曲，眼前有月色湖光，食品精洁、茶酒清香，倒真有一点超凡脱俗的味道，两边岸上的人，望若神仙，谁人不羡？
　　权勿用在娄府虽没有衣食之虑，却仍然难改无赖本性，他外面做着许多不拘形迹的高人行状，心里的念头却鄙俗琐屑。为了五百文钱，就可以与朋友反目为仇。当杨执中的傻儿子拿了他的钱以后又用权勿用自己的高论来对付他，对他说你我原是一个人，你的就是我的，我的就是你的，分什么彼此的时候，权勿用全没有一点高人的豁达大度，而是气的眼睁睁，敢怒而不敢言。并且从此耿耿于怀，与曾经有恩于他的杨执中结下怨仇。这些作为，完全暴露出权勿用见利忘义、鄙俗狭隘的小人心理。
　　权勿用的名士梦正做得快活，不料变故突起，先是他带来的侠客张铁臂玩弄玄虚，以一只猪头冒充人头，骗去了娄府二公子五百两银子，暴露了假侠客真骗子的面目。紧接着权勿用在家乡奸拐霸占僧尼的事被人告发，公差直寻到相府，一条链子将其锁走。虽然后来此事得到昭雪，但从此权勿用的高人生涯也就结束了。
　　权勿用是科举制度所制造出来的一个完全无用的废物，一个被畸形社会扭曲的畸形儿。读书应举这条路所显示的辉煌前景像一块永远可望而不可及的诱饵，像一帖迷魂剂，让一个好端端的庄户子弟不仅完全丧失了谋生的本领，而且丧失了起码的判断是非、辨别真假、认识善恶的能力。在出人头地的狂热痴迷和生活无着的贫穷困顿的双重挤压下，权勿用几乎陷入绝境。作为土地庙里教授几个蒙童的村学先生，他只不过是一个科举制度的可怜的弃几，一个可悲可叹的受害者和不自觉的害人者，但风气恶劣的社会并没有放弃对这个可怜虫的挤压和玩弄，当权勿用从夹缝中找到一条做高人的出路时，其实已付出了真诚、善良和明智的代价，被制造成了一个昏头昏脑，怪模怪样的小丑、骗子、无赖，成为人们的笑柄。
　　吴敬梓对权勿用一流的人物怀着十分复杂的感情，他的厌恶中并非没有一丝同情，他尽情地嘲弄他们，矛头却指向制造这些丑类的社会。因此吴敬梓笔下，权勿用这个人物是可笑得紧，而不是可恶得紧。作品更多地展现了人物的迂腐和呆气，这样一个连路也不会走的、从乡里来的书呆子，其实并没有能力也没有心计去处心积虑、老谋深算地？昆充名士，他的名士梦一度成功，全因为这社会上有娄府公子这样闲暇浅薄、附庸风雅的有钱人。事实上，不是权勿用骗了娄府公子而是两位公子主动成全了他的名士梦，使他陷入更加不能自拔的境地。这一荒诞可笑的事实不仅是对权勿用的嘲讽，更是对娄公子式的人物和这个畸形社会的无情嘲讽。
