　　第43回，此回由汤由汤实两兄弟从家乡赴黔开始，到父子三人准备返乡结束。
　　先是途中遇到劫盐事件，可以看到商、绅、官之间的互相依赖，同时又互相牵制的局面。到了剿苗事件时，又可见边疆文武官员不能协同作战，彼此掣肘的情形。武官有功于朝廷，结果却被降三级告老还乡，可见朝廷的昏聩不明！这与前面的萧云仙的结局似乎异曲同工。
　　第四十四回，此回汤奉汤奏老兄弟相聚为略。汤镇台回到家后，见到侄子汤老六不成气候的样子，十分生气，狠狠斥责！又看到两个儿子的学识太差，就想请教书先生。于是就由萧柏泉引出了余有达。但余有达拒绝应聘。余有达的父亲已过世多年，他与弟弟余有重因找不到好地，一直未葬。这个可见他们多么贫穷，但讲究礼制。不过那么相信风水，真是愚昧。此回中讽刺五河风俗一段，可见作者愤慨之情。
　　第45回，续写余特余持两兄弟的故事。余特在无为州曾收人钱财，帮助打了一桩人命官司，但用的是弟弟余持的名字。现在案发，差役去捉拿余持。余持以没有到过无为州为由，帮哥哥反复应付差役。三番五次，打发了差役后，有人请余特的堂弟余敷及余殷帮忙看风水，并请余特余持作陪。余敷及余殷高谈阔论，余特并不以为然。但哥两个还是去找了张云峰帮忙择地及择日期安葬了已过世多年的父母。文木先生对这哥两赞其恪守道德礼教，但又对其犯法违纪进行揭露。

　　《儒林外史》中也不乏兄友弟恭形象，较为典型的有余特。余特、余持兄弟是遵循人伦纲常的孝悌君子。他们像是暗夜里的灯火，可将人心导向光明。
　　余特、余持两兄弟在小说中，是一对不可忽视，也是作者特意安排的形象。他们最引人瞩目的表现是尽孝。邻居家失火，不得不把父母灵柩抬出。而当地风俗认为，抬出的棺木如再抬进家门是要穷人家的，众亲友都劝他们就此下葬，但他们宁可穷死也要把灵柩请进中堂。
