《儒林外史》中关于尤扶徕的故事很简单，只记了两件不大的事，但仅这两件小事就足以观其为人的可亲可敬，所以我很喜欢这个人物。 尤扶徕，字瑞亭，南直隶江阴县人，也是南京本地的一位老名士，还是虞博士的同年。暮年出仕的经历也与虞博士有些相似，不过他是在陕西同官做知县，任所离故乡比较远。早年似曾云游，与四川成都府人、其时正值壮年的英侠萧昊轩（萧守府云仙的父亲）亦是好友。而今在同官任上，与在此住持海月禅林的甘露僧（这是书中一位令人好生钦敬的老和尚）意气相投，相交深厚。物以类聚，人以群分，从尤扶徕结交的这些人，便可以推知他也借用庄征君形容庄濯江的话来说非等闲之人。 尤扶徕一到任，就做了一件好事。广东一个戴罪之人说不定也是受了什么冤屈的，如杜少卿所言此时多失意之人充发到陕边，不想半路死了，同来的妻子在路上哭哭啼啼，方言不通，与当地人也说不明白。热心人将其带到同官县衙，尤公看那妇人是要回故乡的意思，心里不忍，便取了俸金五十两，差一个老年的差人，自己取一块白绫，苦苦切切做了一篇文，亲笔写了自己的名字尤扶徕，用了一颗同官县的印，吩咐差人：‘你领了这妇人，拿我这一幅绫子，遇州遇县，送与他地方官看，求都要用一个印信。你直到他本地方讨了回信来见我。’ 尤扶徕这一番安排，可谓殷切周到至极，亦见其为人之清白磊落。取俸银做使费，不动公款，可敬可叹；安排老年差人护送，又有经验，又替女性名节着想，可谓考虑周详；尤其是心里不忍，亲自做那一篇文章尤扶徕系与虞博士、庄征君酬答的老名士，文采理当不错，更兼言辞恳切，实堪称用心良苦其情之真，其心之善，令人赞叹！ 老差人亦是好人，不负尤知县的重托，一年后回来复命：一路各位老爷，看见老爷的文章，一个个都悲伤这妇人，也有十两的，也有八两的，六两的，这妇人到家，也有二百多银子。小的送他到广东家里，他家亲戚、本家有百十人，都望空谢了老爷的恩典，又都磕小的的头，叫小的是‘菩萨’。这个，小的都是沾老爷的恩。尤扶徕听了欢喜，又赏了他几两银子。我看《儒林外史》，就喜欢吴敬梓先生这种清清爽爽的白描笔法，没有矫饰的抒情，没有泛滥的议论，言辞朴素到底，而好人的好，坏人的坏，都展现得再明白不过。 书中记尤扶徕的第二件事，就是资助入川寻父路过陕西的郭孝子。郭孝子带着虞博士的书信迂道来投，尤扶徕看罢，着实钦敬郭孝子的义行，不仅慷慨解囊，拿出五十两银子相赠，又特地为郭孝子作书，介绍他入川后去找自己的老友萧昊轩，这是一位古道人先生去寻着他，凡事可以商议。书中没有多写尤扶徕的言辞，但写道郭孝子见尤公的意思十分恳切，不好再辞，只得谢过，收了银子和书子，辞了出来。尤扶徕的恳切与虞博士、杜少卿诸人的厚意一样，都是郭孝子无法推辞的，是何等样，读者尽可发挥自己的想象。吴敬梓先生大手笔，留给读者回味的余地这样充分，不让现代文学批评所看重的文本接受、读者反应云云。
