　　迟衡山是《儒林外史》古典文学小说中塑造的正面人物之一。
　　《儒林外史》的诸位贤人中，杜少卿是奇士豪杰，虞育德是平凡中的真儒，庄绍光是难以出世的隐士，迟衡山则是一位不折不扣的正人君子。
　　读者在小说前三十回看到了太多的蝇营狗苟之流相互吹捧的画面，而直到第三十三回我们终于感受到了那种真性情的豪杰相见恨晚的一幕。迟衡山是正牌的在野的淳儒，而且是个标准的业余宰相，他的社会责任感在诸位贤人中最为强烈。
　　他没有杜少卿的洒脱，没有虞育德的闲淡，也没有庄绍光的悠然，他最大的特征就是正，正得甚至于近乎迂。他认为而今读书的朋友，只不过讲个举业放着经史上礼、乐、兵、农的事，全然不问，显然对社会政治文化环境极为不满。如果说庄绍光的态度是我道不行就退而自省，那么迟衡山就是我道虽不行仍勉力行之。
　　小说中贤人们祭泰伯祠的盛大礼乐活动，虽然以虞博士为首，但首倡、策划和执行的都是迟衡山。他的言行无一不体现着他的正。
　　儒林外史迟衡山是怎样的人
　　迟衡山，何许人也？此人名不见经传，乃是《儒林外史》里的一个小人物。据小说第三十三回介绍，他是江南名士杜少卿表侄卢华士家的业师，和编辑畅销书《历科程墨持运》的编家马二先生是好友。此人之所以引起我的注意，是因为他和余大先生有一段关于抨击风水的议论，很有意思。
　　余大先生有感于本地寻地葬父母很艰难，每耽误了先人的安葬，便向迟衡山请教：这郭璞之说，是怎么个源流？郭璞是东晋的一位作家，著有《葬书》，后被讲风水迷信的人奉为祖师。迟衡山回答道：只要地下干暖，无风无蚁，得安先人，足矣！他还说：士君子惑于龙穴、沙水之说，自心里要想发达，不知已堕于大逆不道。
　　敢于指责惑于风水者乃是堕于大逆不道，这在当时是惊世骇俗之论。余大先生想不通，便问道：怎生便是大逆不道？迟衡山又解释道：有一首诗，念与先生听：‘气散风冲那可居，先生埋骨理何如？日中尚未逃兵解，世上人犹信《葬书》！’这是前人吊郭公墓的诗。小弟最恨而今术士托于郭璞之说，动辄便说，‘这地可发鼎甲，可出状元。’请教先生，状元官号始于唐代，郭璞晋人，何得知唐有此等官号，就先立一法，说是甚么样的地就出一样东西？这可笑得紧！
　　迟衡山接着又反问道：若说古人封拜都能在地理上看得出来，试问淮阴葬母，行营高敞地，而淮阴王侯之贵，不免三族之诛，这地是吉是凶？更可笑这些俗人说，本朝孝陵乃青田先生所择之地。青田命世大贤，敷布兵、农、礼、乐，日比暇给，何得有闲工夫做到这一件事？洪武接位之时，万年吉地，自有术士办理，与青田先生甚么相干！
　　此论对风水之说的驳斥，真是有力得很。郭璞喜欢给人占卜看风水，但对自己的尸骨埋在何处，却不曾算准。他始为谋反的王敦占卜，结果反被王敦所杀，世称兵解。日中尚未逃兵解，世上人犹信《葬书》，便是这个意思。汉代韩信，先助刘邦打天下，曾封淮阴侯，后被吕侯设计杀死，父母妻三族同时被杀，又是大祸临头。韩信的升沉吉凶，与葬母的风水有什么关系？因此，郭璞的《葬书》是信不得的。
　　郭璞谢世，距今已有1677年，但他的风水迷信之说，信徒至今还有不少。可叹的是，有些身为共产党员的领导干部，竟居然也信这一套。数年前的一个夜晚，山西交口县县委大院门前却是灯火通明，几十名党政干部齐刷刷地跪在香案前，代表县委和县政府，虔诚地埋下了升官符几块画有预示升官符号的砖瓦，另有一批桃木弓箭、铜镜等镇邪物。请不要以为此举近乎滑稽，该县的县委书记房吉华和县长李来福却是一脸严肃。他们不相信马克思主义，听不进群众的意见，却虔诚地相信风水先生的话：县委大院风水不好。破解的方法是：在低于县委大院的地方重修看守所；在县城修牌楼；在县委大院的中心和四角埋镇邪物和升官符。升官符灵不灵呢？结果事与愿违，非但不灵，而且他们的乌纱帽也保不住了。风水先生给交口县委领导吃了一剂苦药，不知他们是否后悔了？
　　那么，板子该怎么打呢？《儒林外史》里的杜少卿见解语出惊人：这事朝廷该立个法子，但凡人家要迁葬，叫他到有司衙门递个呈纸，风水先生具了甘结：棺材上有几尺水，几斗几升蚁。等开了，说得不错，就罢了；如说有水有蚁，挖开来不是，即于挖的时候，带一个劊子手，一刀把这奴才的狗头斫下来。那要迁坟的，就依子孙谋杀祖父的律，立刻凌迟处死。此风或可少息了。这个办法，痛快是痛快了，但施行起来，则不可取。对看错风水、触犯刑律者，揭露其虚妄、依法惩处就是了。出洋相的风水先生毕竟与《河伯娶亲》中谋财夺命的巫婆不同，立即把他的脑袋斫下来，对迁坟者立刻凌迟处死，此举不讲政策，过于偏激，不妥。
