　　郭芙为什么要砍断杨过的手臂？
　　在金庸的武侠小说里面，杨过断臂是一个情节的高潮，为了让大武和小武不为了郭芙的事情反目为仇，杨过撒谎说郭靖已经同意把郭芙许配给自己，而这番话也碰巧被小龙女听到，小龙女把淑女剑留给了郭芙，自己出走了，而这是杨过断臂的一个很重要的导火索。
　　其实从杨过上桃花岛开始，郭芙和武氏兄弟一直就跟杨过不对付，小时候相处的不愉快让郭芙与杨过的关系一直非常尴尬。

　　郭芙是郭靖和黄蓉的长女，东邪黄药师的外孙女。
　　因自幼便得到父母宠爱而越发任性骄纵。与武敦儒、武修文两兄弟一起长大。
　　少时曾指使武氏兄弟欺负杨过，使杨过对幼时桃花岛的生活充满怨恨。两人相处不到半年，杨过便随郭靖回到中原去。
　　郭芙和杨过重遇时，两人都已长大成人。郭芙样子美艳照人，衣着光鲜，与杨过当时故意打扮的乞丐装形成强烈的对比，使杨过自卑起来。双方见面时，杨过对她的美貌产生了一丝好感，但这份好感又因郭芙瞧不起他而消失掉。而这时的郭芙已经忘记少时打架的往事，在重遇后尽量对他以礼相待，直至后来发生一连串的误会，使二人结成冤家。
　　一次，父亲郭靖在众人前向杨过提出郭芙的婚事，欲把她嫁与杨过。虽然郭芙不太愿意，但杨过居然在她与众人前断然拒绝了婚事，使郭芙感到很丢脸，并认为杨过坏了她的名声，更感不满。
　　后亦因杨过传出师生不伦恋，郭芙对他甚为鄙视。

　　武氏兄弟后来为了娶郭芙为妻而几乎弄至反目成仇，被杨过打败后才放弃了对郭芙的追求。在宋朝那时，女子清誉比性命还要紧，故杨过此番举动，令郭芙感到愤怒。
　　怨恨的怒火终于因其刚出生之妹郭襄被小龙女抱去换药而爆发，狠狠地责问杨过。言语之间，她道出小龙女被尹志平玷污的事实，引起杨过大怒，打了她一巴掌，郭芙便在盛怒之下拿起淑女剑挥向杨过，杨过的武功本来远胜于她，却因情花毒发作无力闪避，加以淑女剑锋利非常，遭其砍下右臂，〔1〕
　　在杨过等待小龙女的那十六年间，与耶律齐结成了夫妻。
