　　苗人凤和胡一刀沧州一战，令风云变色，惊天地泣鬼神。两人之间，明明是仇敌不共戴天，却处处见相惜相敬的倾慕之情。苗人凤坐下就与胡一刀举碗共饮，毫不作小人防范之态，他相信胡一刀是铁铮铮的汉子，行事光明磊落，不会暗算他，他才是胡一刀真正的知音。
　　田相公范帮主在一旁作陪衬，真是见小，无地自容。苗人凤中了暗算，危急时刻，胡斐飞将军一般从天而降，天神一般奋勇却敌，救了苗人凤的性命。苗人凤看到了与胡斐同被而卧的苗若兰，误会了胡斐行为不轨，大怒之下，反过来找胡斐算账。苗人凤误会胡斐之后为何火气特别大，是因为他的那一段不堪回首的伤心事，对苗若兰的事特别敏感。他最怕的是自己心爱的女儿遭遇和他自己一样的悲惨事。

　　南兰与苗人凤的结合，一开始也许就是命运的错误。南兰的父亲因为有一把宝刀，引来了一场无妄的杀身之祸。苗人凤打抱不平，挺身相救南兰，以一敌五，在惊心动魄的恶战中险胜，但自己也身中敌人的毒针而情形堪危。南兰为苗人凤吸毒，因感谢而对苗人凤以身相许，两人就此结为夫妇，而且有了一个美丽的女儿。故事到此，本应该是一个完美的结局，但悲剧却在一开始已经酿成。南兰对苗人凤有的是感恩，而不是爱情，两人之间并没有感情上的基础。相反，两人的差别太大了，大到了婚后已无法补救和弥合的地步。苗人凤是英雄，是豪杰，是粗人，而南兰却是穿金戴银的官家千金小姐，一个粗糙，一个细腻；一个不懂女人的心，一个对爱却有着过高的幻想和要求。
　　南兰下嫁苗人凤，是出于感激，也有许多英雄崇拜的成分，她其实还不如只见过苗人凤三天的胡夫人那么了解他和真正欣赏他的英雄肝胆。这是因为这风尘三侠是同路人，他不用开口多说话，胡夫人已在他处事的方式中，清楚了解他的为人。她看他与自己的丈夫过招，他两人互相识英雄重英雄，但南兰不懂武功，她只能企图从他的说话去了解他，但偏偏苗人凤是个沉默寡言的人。
　　苗人凤也不是了解南兰，他只是真心爱她。她像是天上掉下来的一块宝石，他觉得幸运，他全心珍惜，但是他不懂得她的需要，就算懂得，他也不会知道怎样去满足她。这个沉默而武艺高强的人爱得那么深，在他对女儿的慈爱中才能充分表现出来。他被人陷害，先被一批敌人用毒粉伤了眼睛，继而另一批敌人上门寻仇，他忍着眼睛剧痛，小心应付来敌，还怕吓慌了刚睡着的小女儿，一面拒敌，一面柔声跟女儿说话，安慰着她，这个情景，不由得使人想起胡夫人来。她拍着初生的孩子睡，见窗外来了敌人，便一手抱着孩子，一手执了武器迎敌，三两下解决了敌人，孩子丈夫都没被惊醒。
　　苗人凤为南兰所弃，这恐怕不是他对南兰用情不专，而是由他性格上的弱点所决定的。苗大侠是个沉默寡言、性格内向的男子汉，他既没有英俊的外貌，更缺少一种女人喜欢的倜傥风流的个性。在感情世界中，苗人凤属于粗线条的，他对南兰不知道如何体贴，正如他对付敌手，只知在武艺上一试高低，而少了一点机智与谋略。苗人凤也许可以公平地打赢胡一刀，但在小人偷袭中却几次受挫。比如他误中蒋调侯的绝门毒针，又比如他中了刘鹤真奸计，被信中的毒药差点害成瞎子，前往天龙门拜祭南兰的时候误中田归农设下的陷进被田归农生擒关进天龙门地牢受尽折磨。由此可见，苗人凤纵然武功卓绝，却并无防人的应变之术，因此他成为悲剧中的主角，也就势所难免。
