　　袁承志本领高人一筹，行棋先人一着，打抱不平，排扰解难，扮演着救苦救难，打抱不平的角色，出道不久，已能独当一面，有所为而来。但袁承志的光彩，却总是被从未正面出场的金蛇郎君的独特神秘魅力所遮过，给我们留下最深刻的印象的，依然不是袁承志的高妙武功，而是金蛇郎君的传奇的人生。
　　因为金蛇郎君的出色，袁承志的性格总是内抑和收敛，不能有充分的发挥，他似乎没有找到自己准确的安身立命的切入点，表现的行为举止缺乏震撼人心的深度。看已是少年老成的袁承志，竭力在模仿前辈高人的潇洒风范，他甚至学起大师兄黄真的滑稽行止来，表面化地想挥洒自如，一手举酒杯，一手拿筷子夹鸡腿，模样实在有些不伦不类，怪模怪样。从内在的气质上看，他实在与金蛇郎君或是黄真有本质的差别，他不能像郭靖那样朴素。

　　袁承志是金庸小说《碧血剑》中的男主角，设定为明末抵御满洲入侵的大将袁崇焕之子，取名承志，寓意续承父亲的遗志，后来定居浡泥国左近的一座大岛屿。
　　袁崇焕枉死后被父亲的旧部救出，这时他还只是一个七岁的小孩子。
　　后来朱安国等袁崇焕旧部成员教他读书写字，并打好武功根基，好让他为父亲袁崇焕报仇。
　　多年后他从李自成部下的崔秋山学到伏虎掌。
　　及后机缘巧合下更拜了华山派的掌门神剑仙猿穆人清为师，并在华山上从铁剑门的千变万劫木桑道长和金蛇郎君夏雪宜的金蛇秘笈中学得一身惊人的武功。
　　多年后，袁承志已成了一个武功高强的青年人，下山后，他行侠仗义，结识红颜知己夏青青，并在七省豪杰的支持下成为武林盟主，协助闯王起义并帮助闯军攻破明王朝首都北京。
　　后来李自成入京，眼见闯军腐化，义兄李岩惨死，因而与青青、何惕守和其他朋友们收复一座位于渤泥国（今文莱）附近、荷兰所殖民的大岛屿，从此隐居海外。
　　《碧血剑》小说最后一回，已成为民间抗清领袖的袁承志看到反清复明的大势已去，觉得自己空有一身惊世骇俗的武功，却无安邦救国的权谋韬略，自己又不愿落草为寇，不禁有些心灰意懒。这时，他回想起张朝唐说过浡泥国民风淳朴、人民安居乐业的情景，便产生了避难海外的想法。随后，他召集一帮同道中人从山东乘船前往东南亚，到达浡泥国左近大海中的一座岛屿。他们赶走了盘踞在那里的红毛海盗，终于在海外开辟了一个新天地。其实，袁承志避难海外的例子并非金庸独创。明末清初小说家陈忱曾写过一部《水浒后传》，描述了以阮小七、李俊为首的一批原梁山好汉，因不堪奸臣恶霸的欺压，纷纷再次造反，但迫于形势不得不出逃海外。后来，他们在暹罗（即泰国）成就了一番大业，李俊最终成为暹罗国主。这些情节虽属虚构，却同《碧血剑》一样反映了当时不少中国人避难东南亚的现实。这些中国移民用自己的聪明才智，为当地社会发展作出了巨大的贡献。
