　　谢逊十岁时拜混元霹雳手成昆为师，在其门下学艺。二十三岁时离开师门，远赴西域，并娶妻生子，加入明教，成为明教四大护教法王之一，渐渐驰名江湖。
　　谢逊二十八岁时，父母妻儿，弟妹仆役，全家一十三口被师父成昆所杀。此后一直尝试为此报仇，却曾两次败于成昆手下。后来成昆失踪，谢逊便开始杀害很多无辜的人，每次于杀人后留下杀人者混元霹雳手成昆，企图引出成昆但不成功，反为自己种下祸根，成为武林公敌。
　　曾为抢夺崆峒派的《七伤拳谱》而击伤崆峒五老中的其中三老；误杀少林派四大神僧之首空见神僧。空见神僧死前要求谢逊寻找屠龙刀以索解当中的秘密。
　　谢逊大约四十一岁时，为了索解屠龙刀中的秘密以报大仇，前往王盘山试刀大会成功抢夺本由天鹰教夺得的屠龙刀，又赌吞毒盐，盐杀海沙派总舵主元广波以报余姚张登云灭门、海门欧阳清惨死之仇；封鼻憋气，杀巨鲸帮帮主麦鲸以雪数十名远洋客商命丧大海、七名妇女被奸杀之耻；大展神威，杀神拳门掌门过三拳，分明是一个为别人仗义出头的侠客，更以一招狮子吼力败与会的群雄，并挟持武当七侠之一铁画银钩张翠山和天鹰教紫微堂堂主殷素素前往东海荒岛，让自己能在岛上思索屠龙刀的奥妙。
　　及后三人遇上海难，流落到北极附近的冰火岛。在流落冰火岛前，因狂性大发，企图杀害殷素素，却遭其蚊须针毁掉双目。
　　在冰火岛时，谢逊与张翠山、殷素素夫妇结拜，并收夫妇二人刚出生的儿子为义子，起名为无忌，以纪念自己早已逝去多年的亲生儿子谢无忌。后来，他帮助张翠山、殷素素、张无忌离开冰火岛，并在临行前教了无忌许多武功秘籍口诀。
　　在冰火岛上住了二十年后，被紫衫龙王黛绮丝接到灵蛇岛去，跟着又在灵蛇岛上以屠龙刀击败多名丐帮高手。
　　谢逊大约六十三岁时返回中土，被奸猾的成昆囚在少室山上，由少林派三位得道高僧看管。
　　给义子张无忌救回后，谢逊当众揭破成昆的假面具，并与之决一死战。将成昆双目刺瞎后，再以七伤拳把对方打至筋脉尽断，成为废人。谢逊深知自己双手沾满了无辜被杀者的鲜血，于是自己散尽武功，任由仇家报复，谢逊被仇家唾沫加身，丝毫无怨言。
