　　儒林外史中庄征君与虞博士是怎样的人
　　庄征君与虞博士是《儒林外史》诸贤人中的至贤之人。杜少卿平居豪举，接待四方宾客，上门来的既然鱼龙混杂，对杜少卿本人的许多事迹也就存在不少异议。而对庄征君与虞博士，却很难找出其行事不妥之处，至少我找不出来。此二人，一为高士楷模，一为真儒表率。
　　庄征君名尚志，字绍光，是南京累代的读书人家。征君者，曾经征辟而不就之隐士之谓也，是尊称。庄征君是神童，十一二岁就会做一篇七千字的赋，闻名天下。不到四十岁已名满一时，他却闭户著书，不肯妄交一人。有客至，听见是杜少卿、迟衡山两位，才肯出来相见。就连虞博士赴任南京，慕名来访，也吃了闭门羹。理由是：我因谢绝了这些冠盖，他虽是小官，也懒和他相见。待到杜少卿解释了虞博士的为人，他才去回拜，结果一见如故。虞博士爱庄征君的恬适，庄征君爱虞博士的浑雅，两人结为性命之交。
　　恬适的确是庄征君最大的特色。庄征君是隐士，有林下之清逸俊朗，却无竹林隐士常见的狂放不羁。他不弃尘世，而是在纷攘红尘中举措有度，从容不迫，成功地固守着自己的一方净土。所以他受朝廷征辟，进京前和妻子说：我们与山林隐逸不同，既然奉旨召我，君臣之礼是傲不得的。但同时又说：你但放心，我就回来，断不为老莱子之妻所笑。庄征君面君，天子问政，正欲奏对，头顶一点钻心疼痛，着实难忍，只好恳请细思之后再为启奏。回到下处看时，头巾里一只蝎子。次日焚香卜筮，卦辞乃是天山遁。庄征君知我道不行，把教养的事细细做了十策，又写了一道求赐还山的本，呈递上去。朝中权臣托人捎话，欲将其收之门墙，以为桃李，庄征君的婉拒之辞不卑不亢，最见其人品格：世无孔子，不当在弟子之列。况太保公屡主礼闱，翰苑门生不知多少，何取晚生这一个野人？这就不敢领教了。太保碰了个软钉子，隔天便以法度为词，教皇帝准了庄征君的还山奏本。朝政这个局面，是庄征君意料之中的，所以辞得那样干脆。其实蝎子也好，卦辞也罢，都不过是吴敬梓先生替嘉靖帝（书中假说是他）留个面子而已。
　　不过在书中，嘉靖把玄武湖赐给庄征君著书立说，鼓吹休明，倒是做了件好事。玄武湖中有五座大洲，四座洲贮了图籍，中间洲上一所大花园，赐予庄征君住，有几十间房子。园里合抱的老树，梅花、桃、李、芭蕉、桂、菊，四时不断的花。又有一园的竹子，有数万竿。园内轩窗四启，看着湖光山色，真如仙境。门口系了一只船，要往那边，在湖里渡了过去。若把这船收过，那边飞也飞不过来。庄征君就住在这花园里，同娘子凭栏看水。闲着无事，斟酌一尊酒，把杜少卿做的《诗说》，叫娘子坐在旁边念与她听。念到有趣处，吃一大杯，彼此大笑中华文士的一个千古梦想，吴敬梓先生就这样用最平实的语言在书中为我们实现了一次。尽管只是在书中，也让我们有短暂的满足，不敢再多求了。每次读到这里，移居玄武湖这几段文字我总会回头再看一遍，不知有无同好之人。
　　庄征君是高士楷模多少是理想世界的楷模；虞博士则是截然不同的路数，在俗世中为我们确立了一个真儒的表率，一个凡人更可学的表率。
　　虞博士生在极出人文的地方常熟，名育德，字果行。虞母梦文昌帝君而有娠，名字源于《易经》的君子以果行育德，梦中文昌亲递纸条上所写。虞博士生而夙惠，长而循礼，无论是自己学诗文、做举业，还是坐馆授徒，都认认真真，踏踏实实，无处不合圣人教诲。虞博士不肯走捷径，勤勤恳恳读书应试，不中亦不狷狂，依旧安安心心地教馆，安贫乐道，宁心守节。五十岁上中了进士，同年的众人，也有五十岁的，也有六十岁的，履历上都不开实际年纪，只有他写的是实在年庚。本来该做翰林的，天子嫌他老，让他去做一个闲官，补了南京国子监博士（所以称为虞博士），虞博士依旧欢喜：南京好地方，有山有水，又和我家乡相近。我此番去，把妻儿老小接在一处，团圞着，强如做个穷翰林。国子监博士亦是穷官，且没有翰林体面，然而虞博士不以这些为意，是他的本心。正如杜少卿跟庄征君介绍的：这人大是不同，不但无学博气，尤其无进士气。他襟怀冲淡，上而伯夷、柳下惠，下而陶靖节一流人物。
　　虞博士为人行事，不仅冲淡，且多德行。无论是做官之前替看葬坟真心实意，替人葬父慷慨解囊，还是做官后教化学中弟子，为蒙冤者伸冤辩白，为不端者全其廉耻之心，还是善待家仆，不计较其势利之心，在虞博士，做起来都那么自自然然。武正字境界不够，为虞博士有所不甘，而杜少卿却能理解，反复地说这也是老人家常有的事，这些做奴才的有什么良心！但老人家两次赏他银子，并不是有心要人说好，所以难得。杜少卿自己做事也是这样，所以他是虞博士的知己。《儒林》中我以为最有振聋发聩之效的是两句话，一句是优伶鲍文卿拒贿时说的自己知道是个穷命，须是骨头里挣出来的钱才做得肉；另一句就是虞博士坐馆的东家祁太爷赞他做事有阴德，虞博士说：阴骘就像耳朵里响，只是自己晓得，别人不晓得。而今这事老伯已是知道了，哪里还是阴德？都是很平实的话，然而都是做人做到那样的境界才说得出来的。
　　虞博士在南京主持一方学宫，主祭泰伯大典，身体力行，为人表率，其教化功绩，正如杜少卿的表亲余氏兄弟激愤于五河县的势利熏心时所言：我们县里，礼义廉耻一总都灭绝了！也因学宫里没有个好官，若是放在南京虞博士那里，这样事如何行的去！看虞博士那般举动，他也不要禁止人怎样，只是被了他的德化，那非礼之事，人自然不能行出来。虞博士后来升迁到浙江，临行前诸贤人在庄濯江家设重阳登高会为其饯别，出发之日杜少卿送在船上，不胜惜别之情。虞博士恳言道：少卿，我不瞒你说，我本赤贫之士，在南京来做了六七年博士，每年积几两俸金，只挣了三十担米的一块田。我此番去，或是部郎，或是州县，我多则做三年，少则做两年，再积些俸银，添得二十担米，每年养着我夫妻两个不得饿死，就罢了。子孙们的事，我也不去管他。现今小儿读书之余，我教他学个医，可以糊口，我要做这官怎的？两人洒泪分手，杜少卿回家将这些话告诉余大先生，余大先生叹道：难进易退，真乃天怀淡定之君子。我们他日出身皆当以此公为法。信然！
　　虞博士浑雅淡定，但绝非一味的浑和。学中弟子储信、伊昭向虞博士进杜少卿的谗言，虞博士正色道：这倒不然。他的才名，是人人知道的，做出来的诗文，人无有不服。每常人在我这里托他做诗，我还沾他的光。浑雅之中偶露峥嵘之处，是我最喜欢虞博士的地方。
　　总之，庄征君是我们理想中的楷模，虞博士是我们现实中最可学的表率。二者都是儒林中的至贤之人，上品中的上品人物。
