儒林外史马纯上的人物形象分析

　　儒林外史马纯上是怎样的人
　　这位马二先生如其原型冯粹中是颇有侠魄的。侠魄在势利风习、文人圈子中是稀有金属，仅这一点就使作者对此君颇公正，使公正的读者对此君难出恶声。只是在说《外史》是群丑图热闹的季节，马二先生成了较为知名的丑角，其主要罪状是蛊惑天真的匡超人走八股道路，其实马二先生不过坚持了一下反映论，陈述了一个基本事实，造了一个逻辑、语法均无毛病，又符合客观实际的陈述句罢了，尽管有些修辞效果，但绝对是既合圣经贤传、又称当今天子之心的。他的作用如同广播喇叭、传声筒之类。就作品的实际看，他不丑，也不恶，在道德上，几乎可以说他是个侠肝义胆好汉。他对匡超人，萍水相逢，却真心爱助，对蘧公孙，仅是初交，就不惜罄囊为之销赃弥祸，对骗过他的洪神仙，仍捐资为之装殓送殡，这都是感人至深的忠厚诚笃的君子行为。这种仗义疏财的侠义精神，在《外史》这部广泛揭露势利风习的风俗喜剧中是极为罕见而难能的，除了杜少卿的平居豪举，就属马二横放特出了。
　　但他并不是作者的理想人物，因为他也以同样的侠魄投入于八股举业，而且正因为他是那样的真诚、热情，使他终于成为一个被现实、历史嘲弄，也被作者讽刺的人物。但作者批评的不是他的品行，只是从他身上透视出科举制度窒息人智能的恶果。
　　《外史》是既不用制度的弊端来开脱卑劣士子，也不用士子的卑劣来为制度辩护的。作者不可企及的深刻之处正在于他一方面以公心来攻伐借制度以行恶的丑类，另一方面又确实写出八股取士制度戕害了无数士子的生命。写周进、范进这样的八股迷，写足了势利风气和取士制度对下层读书人的煎迫，写马二呢，则写足了八股选政对士子思维感受能力的斫伤与蔽锢。写二进是从外在层面着笔，写马二是从内在角度下手的。
　　当马二的侠魄体现为对八股的情有独钟、一往无前、无怨无悔时，便不再赢得人们的敬重，只能让人悲悯了。他几十年如一日地恪守着制艺的真精神，既不弄虚作假，也不投机取巧，他一直一丝不苟地秉承八股正宗衣钵，有资格成为八股科举的正宗代表。他本人事实上已被八股选政抽空，他的心灵、价值取向直到兴趣、感受全都八股化了。据他自我介绍：小弟补廪二十四年，蒙历任宗师的青目，共考过六七个案首，只是科场不利，不胜惭愧！科举胜利对于马二来说，像拉磨驴眼帘上挂的那串红萝卜一样，永远在眼前晃动，却永远也吃不到嘴里。六七个案首的辉煌，诱惑着他忠贞不渝的献身热情，科场不利固然使他惭愧，但并不动摇他的信念，反而提示他再努力坚持下去。于是现实和理想统一于他的职业选择：操选程墨，即可糊口，又不丢专业，可以随时出击。他与举业的联系便从形而上到形而下统一起来了。
　　他身上的正宗味是纯而又纯的，首先，他认定做官的正途必由举业出身。第二，他总结历史经验，认定本朝用文章取士，这是极好的法则。与高傲的隐逸文人王冕的论断截然相反。第三，他衡文的标准是作八股不可带注疏气，尤不可带词赋气，带注疏气不过失之于文采，带词赋气便有碍于圣贤口气，所以词赋气尤在所忌。这与周进叉出魏好古的原则是一致的：当今天子重文章，足下何须讲汉唐！马二更有理论家的架式，他的话带有论证性：有碍于圣贤口气，极为明白透彻地解说了八股取士代圣贤立言这一核心和实质。这一点比程式上的规定更为根本，对士子的束缚也更为致命，因为诗词格律是比八股程式更为严密，更有约束性的。马二本人不是挂羊头卖狗肉的伪君子，他心口如一，开口《孝经》，闭口曾子，批点八股文章，总是采取《语类》、《或问》上的精语。他从未想到过别样的活法，他既不可能像严贡生、王惠那样，也不可能像王冕、杜少卿那样，他坚定不移地走着科举的路，没有半点欺心和私心杂念。他不可能看透严、王是欺心，王、杜是私心（个性），当时社会既不给王、杜那种私心以出路，也不给他这号公心报国的人前途，只是好过了严、王一流的卑劣之徒。他对朝廷、对社会秩序忠心耿耿，绝无任何怨恨，科场不利，只能自己惭愧，连公道不彰之类的牢骚也没有，他正是个彬彬君子。正如猪八戒是没有宗教情怀的世俗人的象征一样，马二是沉溺于教条而不自知、循规蹈矩的文人的共名。
　　在他身上充分体现了教化的有效性，而且教化的精义落实到了感觉，是最后的完成了。当然的显例是马二游西湖全无会心，这几乎成了文人中流行的歇后语。他游西湖，不是为了赏心悦目，体验生之美好，而是为了颇可以添文思，这一功利目的，最要命的是他那套文思的定势也取消了他鉴赏美景的能力，无论是断桥残雪，还是平湖秋月，对他来说都不在意思，苏堤春晓、六桥烟柳，只是让他觉得走也走不清，甚是可厌。别人嫌少，他嫌多，与此同理，对别人是美不胜收，对他是一无所感，除了只能用《中庸》的词句形容西湖，他别无语汇。语言是思想的家园。《中庸》等圣贤书把他的语言都限定得僵死了，他哪里还有自己？哪里还有活人的生动的情趣。在他和范进这样的人身上，反衬出了杂览文学对生命的滋润作用。范进不知苏轼何人，他不知李清照何人，不是完全清楚地说明了当时那种教育的效果么？
　　他清贫，同许多未仕文人一样，所以，他还有个问问可有发财机会的念头，对女客也有从远处观看的勇气，尤有关注女客换衣服的欲望，还知道尝尝各样的点心，不过，也就这些了，就这么简陋！最使他激动、隆而重之的是对仁宗皇帝御书的扬尘舞蹈的跪拜。然而，他爱皇帝，皇帝不爱他，可奈何？历朝文人学子对皇帝不都有着与此相同的情结么？无论是苦恋的屈原，还是狂逸的李白，更别说有着杜甫那样的向日葵式忠诚的人了。马二的悲剧与喜剧的历史意蕴正在这里。
　　作者绝对是公心写马二的，所以才有了高超的自然讽刺艺术，其要点正在于如实描写，叙述人是隐身的，让人物自身的行为完具对自己的嘲讽。
