　　《儒林外史》在揭露批判当时社会上的各种丑恶现象的同时，也塑造了一批正面人物，以寄托作者本人的理想。这些正面人物形象是作为儒林群丑的对立面而出现的。他们鄙弃功名富贵，不愿与社会上的黑暗势力同流合污，有些人甚至不受封建礼教的束缚，对程朱理学表示怀疑。这在当时是有一定进步意义的。

　　然而，就在作者所精心塑造的王冕身上，我们清楚地看到了吴敬梓自己的思想局限。首先，王冕之所以不做官，是由于对母亲的孝道。因为王冕的母亲临终时叮嘱儿子不要做官，王冕是一直遵从的。可见作者心目中把孝道摆在了文行出处之上。这正是作者对封建道德观念的崇拜信仰。其次，王冕的清高除了继承了独善其身的封建士大夫传统思想外，作者还把他写成具有儒者气象的高人，他劝朱元璋应该以仁义服人，不可只靠兵力。可见作者的最高理想仍没有跳出孔孟儒家的一套仁政措施，而这一套归根结底都是为了巩固封建统治的。
　　根据我们对这个被作为作者的理想人物而摆在全书第一回的王冕形象的分析，就可以看出作者本人思想上存在的局限性。
　　杜少卿是作者着笔最多、用力最勤的一个正面人物形象，在他身上比较全面地体现了作者的思想。
　　他反对科举制度，瞧不起作八股文的儒生，认为这学里的秀才，未见得好似奴才。他极端蔑视功名富贵，甚至不喜欢人在他跟前说人做官，说人有钱。他敢于藐视封建礼教和传统习俗，竟一手拿着金酒杯，一手携着他妻子的手，去逛清凉山，一边走一边大笑，使两边的游人都不敢仰视。他甚至对朱熹公开表示怀疑。在谈到前人有关《诗经》的注释时，杜少卿曾说过这样一段话：
　　朱文公解经，自立一说，也是要后人与诸儒参看。而今丢了诸儒，只依朱注，这是后人固陋，与朱子不相干。
　　明清以来，朱熹对儒家典籍的注释已成为天经地义，是任何人不许反对的。而在杜少卿眼里却把朱熹降低到一个普通学者的地位，认为他只不过是自立一说，并且要后人与诸儒参看。这实际是对朱熹的权威地位表示怀疑和反对。所谓后人固陋，正是指责统治阶级硬把朱注定于一尊，让天下读书人盲从。后来作者又通过武书的谈话加以发挥：
　　近来这些做举业的，泥定了朱注，越讲越不明白。四五年前，天长杜少卿先生纂了一部《诗说》，引了些汉儒的说话，朋友们就都当作新闻。
　　可见作者心目中的朱熹并非怎么了不起，他的注解更无所谓权威性。但当时考八股文只许依据朱注，原是封建统治者的功令明文规定的；而武书却认为如果泥定了朱注，就越讲越不明白，这正反映出吴敬梓本人不仅不同意朱熹的学术见解，而且对当时统治阶级所规定的科举制度（即功令）也表示不满。这在程朱理学占统治地位、八股文风靡一代的情况下，确已是难能可贵的了。杜少卿原是个豪华公子，却非常轻视金钱，经常把大捧的银子拿出来资助别人，甚至被人把钱骗去，终于很快地把田产卖光，弄得一贫如洗，只靠卖文为活。但他却布衣蔬食，心里淡然，满足于山水朋友之乐。
　　他把许多封建官僚和地主都不看在眼里，别人要他去会见现任知县，拜知县做老师，他说：王家这一宗灰堆里的进士，他拜我做老师我还不要，我会他怎的？当臧蓼斋贩卖他那一套赤裸裸的市侩哲学时，杜少卿对臧的结论是：你这匪类，下流无耻极矣！可见杜少卿身上已多少带有离经叛道的气味，同正统的儒家思想有了一定的距离。但另一方面他又同王冕一样，也很重视孝道，但凡说是见过他家老太爷，就是一条狗也是敬重的。这简直把孝道抬高到盲目信奉的地步了。
　　与杜少卿性格气质相近的正面人物，还有早子杜少卿出现在书中的蘧景玉，以及到第四十六回才出场的虞华轩。他们可以说是作者对杜少卿这个艺术形象的补充。虽然着墨不多，却都具有反功名富贵，反市侩作风的特点。可是蘧景玉的孝道，虞华轩的知书达礼，也同样是吴敬梓思想中所存在的正统儒家封建思想的反映。
　　在《儒林外史》中作为上上人物出现的是虞育德和庄绍光。他们甚至是杜少卿最推崇、最敬重的人。虞育德在书中被称为真儒，而且是当时唯一能用自己的言行去德化旁人的圣贤之徒。祭泰伯祠的大典就是由他主祭的。这个人虽有待人厚道的美德，却不大讲是非原则。
　　根据书中所描写的他的某些行为来判断，他身上明显地存在着封建社会世俗的中庸之道。庄绍光是杜少卿所师事的人，他确有不肯屈节于权贵，不爱同官场势利中人交往的一面；但他对君臣之礼却很看重，有人荐举他入京去见皇帝，他还是去了。只是到了京城后，感到我道不行，才又回到南京，著书立说，鼓吹休明。尽管他辞官不做，可是皇帝赐给他一座在玄武湖的别墅，他还是老实不客气地享受了。这种讲求文行出处的方式，对封建统治阶级又有什么害处呢？
　　另外，作为杜少卿的好友，还有一个迟衡山。他的最高理想是经史上的礼乐兵农。他说：而今读书的朋友，只不过讲个举业；若会做两句诗赋，就算雅极的了。放着经史上礼乐兵农的事，全然不问！我本朝太祖定了天下，大功不差似汤武，却全然不曾制作礼乐。
　　如何去实践礼乐兵农的事呢？答案是倡议修建泰伯祠，并用古礼古乐致祭，借此大家学习礼乐，成就些人才，也可以助一助政教。可见他所希望的仍不过是实现封建统治者所吹嘘的德治仁政，他的理想不过是理想化了的封建正统思想。迟衡山的倡议终于实现了，而且作者还把用古礼古乐祭泰伯祠当作书中特别重要的一件大事来描写，并主观臆造地夸张为两边百姓，扶老携幼，挨挤着来看，欢声雷震。其实，这完全暴露了作者思想中顽固落后的一面。这种复古恋旧的迂腐行动，不仅不足以挽回世道人心，反而使今天的读者感到荒唐可笑。
