　　杜少卿是作者极力称赞的人物，淡薄功名，讲究文行出处，对朝政有清醒的认识。在科举制度和八股毒害的世间，科举成为求取功名仕途的桥梁，极少数人一跃而上，一旦成名就变身为鱼肉百姓、贪得无厌的假名士，一味追逐功名富贵，从而把那文行出处都看轻了。

　　话说杜少卿别了迟衡山出来，问小厮道：那差人他说甚么？小厮道：他说，少爷的文书已经到了。李大老爷吩咐县里邓老爷，请少爷到京里去做官。邓老爷现住在承恩寺。差人说，请少爷在家里，邓老爷自己上门来请。杜少卿道：既如此说，我不走前门家去了，你快叫一只船，我从河房栏杆上上去。当下，小厮在下浮桥雇了一只凉蓬，杜少卿坐了来家。忙取一件旧衣服、一顶旧帽子，穿戴起来，拿手帕包了头，睡在床上。叫小厮：你向那差人说，我得了暴病，请邓老爷不用来。我病好了，慢慢来谢邓老爷。小厮打发差人去了。娘子笑道：朝廷叫你去做官，你为甚么妆病不去？杜少卿道：你好呆！放着南京这样好顽的所在。留着我在家，春天秋天同你出去看花吃酒，好不快活！为甚么要送我到京里去？假使连你也带往京里，京里又冷，你身子又弱，一阵风，吹得冻死了也不好。还是不去的妥当。

　　二、对妇女尊重，反对歧视和摧残。
　　（一）、尊重妇女，讲求地位平等。
　　在封建社会的毒害下，世人皆以三从四德约束女子。《大明律》中还首次明确规定了：若命妇夫亡，再嫁者，罪亦如之，追夺并离异。明清统治者基于维护自身业已腐朽的制度的需要，不断强化对妇女守节的推崇和提倡。《内训》、《古今列女传》、《规范》等所谓女教读物铺天盖地，明清帝王都曾下过不少诸如此类的诏书、制文。民间那密布的贞节牌坊和各地方志中守节一生、甚至殉夫从死的妇女大量的涌现。
　　杜少卿却不顾封建社会礼法的束缚，以平等身份对待妻子，反对约束妇女的三从四德。别人劝他纳妾，他引用晏子的话：今虽老而丑，我固反见其姣且好也。他反对纳妾，说：娶妾的事，小弟觉得最伤天理。天下不过是这些人，一个人占了几个妇人，天下必有几个无妻之客。小弟为朝廷立法：人生须四十无子，方许娶一妾，此妾如不生子，便遣别嫁。他敢于在封建社会窒息的时代在

　　儿明媒正娶，等着宋家择吉过门。但后来发现光景不对，宋家大模大样地要将沈琼枝直接抬到府里去，这不像要将她待为正室的样子，沈父沈大年知道事情不妙，就问女儿：这门亲事，还是就得就不得？女儿，你也须自己主张。沈琼枝道：爹爹，你请放心，我家又不曾写立文书，得他身价，为什么肯伏低做小！他既如此排场，爹爹若是和他吵闹起来，倒反被外人议论。我而今乘轿子，抬到他家去，看他怎样待我。这是沈琼枝出场后的第一句话，从这精炼的几句话中，我们不仅可以看到一位精明干练的女子，而且从中看出了沈的有勇有谋，她要将一切事情原委弄个究竟后再做打算，看出了她的反抗斗争不是莽撞糊涂的瞎闹一气，而是明白就理的为人格独立和尊严而进行的斗争。她不是怀着替天行道、拯救苍生的使命去奔赴人生的，她是以一种自救的心态与命运抗争的，她的行为包含了她对当时社会清醒地认识：要拯救自己不要企图靠那个混浊不堪是非不分的社会，只有靠自己的力量去拼、去赌，才算是解救自己的唯一出路。
