　　《儒林外史》杜慎卿人物形象分析
　　《儒林外史》中的二杜是真名士，然少卿与慎卿又不一样。少卿是儒家的狂狷，慎卿则是所谓的文士风流。
　　慎卿好男风，和妇人隔着三间屋就闻见他的臭气。然其并不属意梨园中人，唯其如此，方每每有不得知己之叹，方每每对月伤怀，临风洒泪，方叹老天辜负其万斛愁肠，一身侠骨。季苇萧之所谓风流，不过处处娶亲而已，而慎卿之风流，只愿相遇于心腹之间，相感于形骸之外，遇得一个知己，同生同死，此方是用情之真也。慎卿妙论，千古唯汉哀帝禅天下与董贤，独得情之正。这种话在少卿是万说不出来的。哀帝并非明君，董贤亦多佞行，唯其让天下纯出乎情，则实在是千古一人，真真正正的不爱江山爱美人。
　　慎卿论情之语，后人评曰一迷至此，唯其迷到这个地步了，方能成就季苇萧的那段雅耍。唯其是真不俗，方能在发现之后，一谑了之。
　　同人间每好论中国旧小说中的同性恋描述，以我意言之，旧小说中的男风之事，实在以《儒林外史》中此两回最妙，李渔不在其匹，《品花宝鉴》更下之矣。杜倩，字慎卿，是吴敬梓长篇讽刺小说《儒林外史》中的人物。
　　杜慎卿出身于一个一门三鼎甲、四代六尚书的官宦世家，生得面如傅粉，眼若点漆，温恭而雅，飘然有神仙之概，又有几分才情，是江南有名的风流才子他自恃出身高贵、学识不凡，处处做出名士雅人的举止，博得了一班朋友的亲近，日日生活在他们的赞誉、吹捧和奉承中，自己更觉得与众不同起来。然而，他也确有一些不同流俗之处，行为举止间，却仍然时时透出些内心深处的庸俗和卑污，使明眼人识出了他虚伪的本性。
　　杜慎卿诗赋做得好，曾在二十七州县的诗赋考试中获得案首，在与朋友论诗时，也确实能说出些自己的见解。但他偏要反对即席赋诗，说是雅得这样俗，主张学魏晋名士挥麈清谈。这真是清高脱俗得很，其实在他心中，真正热衷的还是功名举业，打算着只在这两年要中。那些清高脱俗，只是一种故意做出的姿态。
　　杜慎卿喜欢结交朋友，他的朋友中有些确是平民百姓和地位比较低下的人，他和他们宴游寻欢，纵情玩笑，真有几分慷慨好士的风流气派，但说到底，他的交友只不过想借这一班朋友来烘托自己，满足一种居高临下、夸夸其谈的欲望。在他内心深处，从来没有真正尊重过他们，也决不想给他们什么实际的帮助。王府里的宗先生想跟他攀世交，他不答应，嫌宗先生地位低下，只怕而今敝年伯也不要这一个潦倒的兄弟！鲍廷玺在他身边，一直小心侍候，曲意奉承，最后想从杜慎卿处借几百两银子，却被他婉言拒绝，已所不欲却施于人，把鲍廷玺推到同族兄弟杜少卿那里去了。可见他的仗义好士也带着许多虚伪的成份。
　　杜慎卿一心想作风流名士，他心中向往的其实是一种悠游闲散、声色犬马的富贵闲人生活，对感官之乐特别偏爱，又存了贪图名利虚荣的俗念，想在举业上有所成就，这些在世家子弟中原也不足为怪，但他既享尽风流艳福，又想装成正人君子，既想追求功名利禄，又想扮作雅人高士，就使自己常常陷于心口不一的矛盾之中，尽管他运用许多聪明才智来竭力掩饰，也不免常露马脚，让人们看出风流儒雅后面的庸俗不堪。
　　他喜爱阿谀奉承，诸葛天申把他介绍给朋友时说出他诗赋考试第一的事，他马上以自谦的口气夸耀道：那日小弟小恙进场，以药物自随，草草塞责而已。萧金铉与他一见面，便把杜慎卿的家庭和才情吹捧一番，又是江南王谢风流，又是尊府白眉，听得杜慎卿心里欢喜。但是郭铁笔来访，同样是把他的家世和才华奉承一番，他却在事后故作斥责他一见我偏生有这些恶谈。其实郭铁笔的吹捧，杜慎卿并非不爱听，只不过他的表述过于粗俗直露，少了些含蓄和技巧，不能迎合杜慎卿既爱听奉承，又要作谦谦君子的心理，所以只能遭到斥责。
　　杜慎卿生活奢靡，女色男色都爱。媒婆沈大脚替他物色到一个小妾，一听说姑娘长得标致，十二分的人才还多着半分，他立即动心，吩咐：你叫她收拾，我明日去看。但是季苇萧向他道贺恭喜纳宠时，他却又做出一副无可奈何的模样，愁着眉说什么，这也为嗣续大计，似乎是不得已而为之，并且借题发挥，把女人大骂了一通：妇人哪有一个好的？小弟性情，是和妇人隔着三间屋就闻见她的臭气。这番话，把自己描绘成了一个清心寡欲的君子，可是事实上却全不是这么回事。不久后的一次酒宴中，杜慎卿微醉上来，不觉吐露出心中隐秘之情，原来他倾心追求的是一种男色，虽然从他嘴中引经据典地说出时，这一腐朽庸俗、丑陋不堪的行为，已被遮掩得朦胧不清，但说到底，这酒后真言毕竟使人们看到了他卑鄙丑恶的内心世界。
